De La Salle University (Philippines: Pamantasang De La Salle or Unibersidad Nac De La Salle), also referred to by its acronym DLSU or De La Salle or La Salle for short, is a private, Catholic, co-educational research institution run by higher education institutions. Brothers from a church school are in Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila, Philippines. It was founded by Christian brothers in 1911 as Delasha College (DLSC) in Nozaleda Street, Paco, Manila and Br. Blimond Pierre Eilenbecker, FSC served as the first director. The educational institution moved to its current location in 1921 to accommodate the increase in enrollment. The college received university status on February 19, 1975 and is the oldest component of De La Salle Philippines (DLSP). The network is composed of 16 Lasallian educational institutions and was established in 2006 to replace the De La Salle University system.

Before the war, the Catholic University was originally an elementary and high school Christian brother education institution dedicated to all boys. In 1920, it began offering a two-year Associate of Arts in Business, which was later discontinued in 1931 and offered a Bachelor of Science in Business. DLSU currently offers co-educational undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs through its seven colleges and one college that specializes in various disciplines (including business, engineering, and liberal arts).

Before all transferred to its current trimestral academic system, the students and alumni of the pre-war De La Salle College were originally called Lasallite by Irish-American Christian brothers-a Christian gentleman who abided by the grace and spirit of St. Lasalle & Enthusiastic. Lasallites were taught by Irish-American Christian brothers to live according to their traditional motto Religio, Mores, et Cultura (religion, morality and culture). The international term currently used in 82 countries/regions is Lasallian, while the original French term with a history of 350 years is Lasallien-Homme de Foi (people of faith), as a student and alumni of one of the Christian Brothers Schools of Saint-Lazare. The patron of the university is St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, the Vatican’s universal patron saint of Christian educators and all those who work in the field of education. He is the founder of De La Salle Christian Brothers and its international global network of 1,500 Lasallian educational institutions established in 82 countries around the world.

DLSU is listed by the Philippine Higher Education Commission (CHED) as a center of excellence for 14 projects and a development center for 5 projects. As of 2010, the university is also one of 40 institutions granted autonomous status by CHED. Similarly, it is the first of only two institutions to be awarded the highest level of certification (Level IV) by the Philippine Certification Association. Schools, colleges and universities (PAASCU). The university is a member of several international university associations, including the ASEAN University Network (AUN) and the International Association of Universities (IAU), as well as local organizations such as the South Manila Inter-Agency Consortium.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) currently ranks DLSU in the 801-1000 bracket of its World University Rankings and 166th in Asia University Rankings. The Times Higher Education (THE) lists De La Salle University as the only Philippine private university in its World University Rankings and Asian University Rankings. DLSU is currently in brackets 1001+ and 301-350, respectively. Currently, De La Salle University is the only private university in the Philippines that appears in both the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
