The American University (AU or the United States) is a private, research university with a 90-acre (36 hectare) ward circle on the main campus of Washington, DC, mostly in the neighborhood of Spring Valley. Northwest DC AU is covered by a charter Congress Act 1893 At the urging of John Fletcher Hurst, the Methodist bishop, he tried to create an institution that promotes public service, internationalism, and pragmatic idealism. AU broke ground in 1902, opened school in 1914, and enrolled the first batch of undergraduates in 1925. Although affiliated to the United Methodist Church, religious belief is not an admission criterion.
American universities have eight schools and colleges: the School of International Service, the School of Arts and Sciences, the Kogod School of Business, the School of Communication, the School of Professional and Extended Studies, the School of Public Affairs, the School of Education, and the Washington School of Law (WCL). There are more than 160 majors, including 71 bachelor's degrees, 87 master's degrees, 10 doctoral degrees, and JD, LLM, and SJD programs. AU has more than 13,000 students, representing all 50 states and 141 countries in the United States; approximately one-fifth of the students are international students. It is classified as "R2: Doctoral University-High Research Activities".
The alumni, faculty and staff of American University include two Pulitzer Prize winners, two Nobel Prize winners, one U.S. Senator, 25 U.S. House of Representatives, 18 U.S. ambassadors and several foreign heads of state. American University is one of the top five affiliated schools of the U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs, Congressional staff, and other government agencies.
The university owns WAMU, the flagship capital subsidiary of the National Public Radio, which has been a source of domestic and internationally distributed programs, such as The Diane Rehm Show and the most recent 1A, which was called “1A” in the “First Amendment” ".
