Chamberlain University’s predecessor was the Deaconess School of Nursing; its related organization, Deaconess Central Hospital; and the service tradition of deacons.
The tradition of deaconess began in Europe in the 19th century, when Teodor Verdner’s Kaiserswee, Germany established the first deaconess family and hospital in 1836. The word deacon means "one who is dedicated to serving ", is the female gender deacon of the word. The Deaconess Foundation exists today as a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
The Deaconess Central Hospital was first established in St. Louis in 1889 by the St. Louis Evangelical Deaconess Association, which was part of the Evangelical Bishops’ Conference and later merged with other Protestant denominations to form the United Church of Christ. The hospital was originally located at 2119 Eugenia Street, then moved to 4117 West Bell Plaza in 1893, and finally ended at 6150 Oakland Avenue in 1930. The hospital named Forest Park Hospital was sold to Tenet Healthcare Corp. Dallas in 1997. In 2004, Forest Park Hospital was acquired by Argilla Healthcare Inc., which merged with Doctors Community Healthcare Corp. of Scottsdale, Arizona to become Envision Hospital Corp. It was acquired by Success Healthcare LLC in 2008. After many difficult years, including the firing of most employees, its emergency room closed in 2011. In 2012, its property was acquired by the nearby St. Louis Zoo as part of a 20-year expansion project.
