Rutgers University (RU; / [R ʌ牛逼ɡ ər ž /), officially named Rutgers New Jersey State University, is a public land-grant research university located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Rutgers University was chartered in 1766 and was originally called Queen’s College. It is the eighth oldest college in the United States, the second oldest in New Jersey (at Princeton University), and one of the nine colonial colleges in the United States that chartered before the American Revolution. In 1825, Queen's College was renamed Rutgers College to commemorate Colonel Henry Rutgers, whose large number of gifts to the school stabilized its finances during uncertain times. For most of its existence, Rutgers University was a private liberal arts college, but after being designated as the State University of New Jersey by the New Jersey State Legislature through laws promulgated in 1945 and 1956, it has developed into a male and female college. A public research university in the same school.
Today Rutgers University has three different campuses located in New Brunswick (including neighboring Piscataway), Newark and Camden. The university has other facilities in other parts of the state, including marine research facilities on the coast of New Jersey. Rutgers University is also a land-grant university, a sea-grant university, and the largest university in the state. 9,000 faculty and staff in 175 academic departments provide guidance to more than 45,000 undergraduate students and more than 20,000 graduate and professional students. The university was awarded the Central State Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the Association of Universities in the United States and the Association for University Research. Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus is considered a public Ivy League.
