The University of Toronto (University of Toronto or UToronto) is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located on the grounds surrounded by Queens Park. It was established by the Royal Charter in 1827 and was named King's College at the time. It was the first higher education institution in Upper Canada. Originally controlled by the Church of England, the university adopted its current name after becoming a secular institution in 1850. As a university, it consists of eleven colleges. It is the school that receives the most annual research funding and donations of any university in Canada. It is one of the two members of the Association of American Universities outside the United States, and the other is McGill University.
 
Academically, the University of Toronto is known for its influential campaigns and courses in literary criticism and communication theory, collectively known as the Toronto School. The university is the birthplace of insulin and stem cell research, the first artificial heart pacemaker, and the first successful lung transplant and nerve transplant. The university also has the first electron microscope, the development of deep learning, neural networks, multi-touch technology, the recognition of the first black hole Cygnus X-1, and the development of NP-completeness theory.
 
The team playing blues is a sports team, representing intercollegiate leagues, and related to gridiron football, rowing and ice hockey. The earliest recorded football game took place at the University College of Toronto in November 1861.
