Hushou University evolved from Hushou Technical College and Hushou College of Arts, Science and Technology. Lakehead Technical College was established in response to a briefing paper outlining the needs of higher education institutions in northwestern Ontario. It was established by an order of Ontario on June 4, 1946. The course began in January 1948 in a temporary rented dormitory in downtown Port Arthur. In September of the same year, the first batch of university courses were added to the curriculum.
Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology was established under an act of the Ontario Legislature, which was announced on August 1, 1957. Many years later, the original Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology Act was amended, granting the college the power to establish new colleges and granting degrees in arts and sciences.
The Lakehead University Act was Royal Assent on June 22, 1965, and entered into force on July 1, 1965. Hushou College of Arts, Science and Technology (hereafter called "Hushou University") continued under this new charter. The first study was awarded on May 5, 1965. The first university president was Senator Norman McLeod Paterson (Norman McLeod Paterson).
