Robert Morris University originated from the Pittsburgh School of Accounting in 1921 and was founded by Andrew Blass. The courses used were similar to those supervised by him as the Dean of Pace College in Washington, DC. His successor, CW Salmond, supervised in 1935 An expansion that added business and secretarial studies, and the school was renamed the Robert Morris School of Business to commemorate the founding fathers of the "American Revolutionary Financiers". In 1942, the Robert Morris School moved to the William Penn Hotel to accommodate the growing enrollment, and in 1959 purchased its own downtown building at 600 Fifth Avenue.
In 1962, the school purchased Pine Hill Manor and Farm in Moontown, Pennsylvania, which was formerly the home of Oliver Kaufman, vice president of Kaufman Department Store in Pittsburgh, his wife Freda and their children. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania subsequently granted the school a license to grant an associate degree, and the school became the Robert Morris Junior College, which was operated by two separate campuses. The first new building on the Moontown campus, the Franklin Center and three residence halls were built in 1963.
In 1969, the school began to offer a Bachelor of Business Administration and became the Robert Morris College. In 1978, the first batch of postgraduates in business administration, taxation, and business teacher education were enrolled; in 1999, the first doctoral program was opened. In 2002, the school obtained university status and was renamed Robert Morris University. In 2010, the university sold its downtown center at 600 Fifth Avenue to Duquesne University.
On September 10, 2015, Robert Morris appointed Christopher B. Howard as the eighth president. Howard, the former principal of Hampden-Sydney College, is the first African-American principal in RMU history; he took office in February 2016.
