The State University of New York (SUNY/süñi/soo-nee) is a system of public colleges and universities in the state of New York. It is the largest comprehensive system of universities, colleges and community colleges in the United States. There are 424,051 students in total, plus 2,195,082 adult education students, spanning 64 campuses across the state. Led by the Chancellor of the Exchequer Jim Malatras, the State University of New York system has 91,182 employees, including 32,496 faculty and staff, and approximately 7,660 degree and certificate programs and a budget of $10.7 billion.
The SUNY system has four "university centers": Albany (1844), Binghamton (1946), Buffalo (1846) and Stony Brook (1957). SUNY’s administrative office is located in Albany, the capital of the state. It has satellite offices in Manhattan and Washington, DC. It covers an area of 25,000 acres. SUNY’s largest campus is the SUNY School of Environmental Science and Forestry. Although the State University of New York system does not officially recognize a flagship university, the University of Buffalo and Stony Brook State University of New York are sometimes regarded as unofficial flagships.
The State University of New York was established by Governor Thomas E. Dewey in 1948 through legislation to implement the recommendations of the Interim Committee on State University Needs (1946-1948). The committee was chaired by Irving D. Young, then chairman of General Electric. The system was greatly expanded during the governorship of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who was personally interested in the design and construction of the new State University of New York facilities throughout the state.
