In February 2009, the TERRA (Technical and Environmentally Sensitive Residential Buildings) Sustainable Design Demonstration House was completed. The LEED Platinum TERRA house is designed by the Department of Architecture. It is a studio where students majoring in architecture and design can design "green" houses in the urban area. It can also be used as a demonstration house for tourists to visit and use as an educational tool. . community.
 
Memphis received a "C" rating in the 2009 Campus Sustainability Report Card issued by the Sustainable Giving Association. Only 34 schools achieved higher grades.
