In 2005, the board of directors approved the relocation of Concordia University's Texas campus. Since its inception, the school occupies 23 acres (9.3 hectares) near downtown Austin. The new campus is located in northwest Austin and covers an area of 384 acres (155 hectares). Construction started in the spring of 2007, the new campus opened in September 2008, and it was officially completed on October 26, 2008.
The city of Austin allowed the demolition of the old campus. A developer purchased the space and planned to build a mixed-use development project; however, the developer filed for bankruptcy in 2011.
The location of the new Concordia campus is the former Schlumberger Austin System Center. The site was previously a research and development facility with six buildings connected by a covered walkway and surrounded by a natural trail. These six buildings are named after the letters A-F. Although they have undergone extensive renovations, they retain their basic design and features, including solid oak decorations, large windows, skylights and atriums.
Three new structures were built before occupying the new campus: student dormitories, a playground, and a front door/guardhouse. In addition to the new buildings, 600 additional parking spaces and new roads were built to cope with the increased campus traffic. In 2014, Concordia broke ground on a softball field completed in 2016.
The campus includes a 250-acre (100-hectare) nature reserve with springs, wetlands, caves, dense trees, and wildlife. A 10-A federal license is required, and only one other higher education institution holds it. The inclusion of a nature reserve allows Concordia to devote time to the urban environmentalism of the Austin community. Concordia University Nature Reserve is part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, a system of protected areas in western Travis County that provides habitat for many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, such as golden-cheeked warblers and black crests Warbler, these two rare species are songbirds that breed in central Texas.
In 2013, Dr. Thomas E. Cedel announced his retirement from Concordia University in Texas. In 2014, the former Dean of the Business School, Dr. Don Christian, was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer.
