Liverpool Hope University is a public university with a campus in Liverpool, England. This university was developed from three Christian teacher training colleges: St. Catherine’s College (formerly Warrington Training College), Notre Dame College and Christ’s College. This university is unique in European higher education and has a universal tradition. St. Catherine's College has always been the Anglican Church and the University of Notre Dame, and Christian College is Catholic. The Anglican Bishop of Liverpool David Shepard and the Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool Drake Wallock (named after the University’s Sheppard-Worlock Library) played an important role in its formation. Its name comes from Hope Street, which connects the city’s Anglican Church and the Catholic Cathedral, where graduation ceremonies take turns.
Although the university includes active researchers, it is mainly recognized for its teaching. In the late 2010s, it received a gold rating in the British Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), and its ranking in the teaching-focused rankings was comparable to the poorly performing Russell Group universities.
The current vice president Gerald Pillay summed up the university as a small liberal arts college-style environment, "[student is] a name, not a number." Its "small and beautiful" spirit is in sharp contrast with the neighbouring University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).
