In 1946, the Emergency Teacher Training College of the University of Birmingham was established in Worcester on one of the former Royal Air Force bases used during World War II. Henry Hines came to Worcester from Canterbury Institute of Technology as the dean of the college. EG Peirson followed Hines as the principal of the college from 1951 to 1978. During his tenure, in the 1970s, the National Academic Awards Committee validated the Worcester College of Higher Education's degree and the former Pearson Library, and the Pearson Learning and Guidance Center is now open. The third principal of the college, David Shadbolt, began to lead him in 1978, bringing a new organizational system based on three schools-education and teaching research, art and science. In 1992, Dorma Urwin became the new president, and Coventry University agreed to validate the institution's degree programs. Herefordshire and Worcestershire Colleges of Nursing and Midwifery were absorbed in 1995. In 1997, the Privy Council confirmed the institution's degree-granting authority, and it was subsequently called the University College of Worcester. In 2003, David Green was appointed as Dorma Urwin's successor and later became the vice-principal of the institution. In 2005, the Privy Council granted university status. In September of the same year, the institution was renamed "University of Worcester." In 2010, the Privy Council of the United Kingdom granted the university the right to grant research degrees. In the same year, the university opened an urban campus in the refurbished former infirmary, creating a home for the business school. Two years later, in 2012, the university opened The Hive, a £60 million facility that focuses on learning resources, technology, social and learning spaces. The facility is a joint venture between the University and Worcester County Council, officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen.
