Ryerson University (commonly known as RyeU or RU) is a public research university located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The university’s core campus is located in the Garden District, although it also operates facilities elsewhere in downtown Toronto. The university has seven academic departments/colleges, the School of Art, the School of Communication and Design, the School of Community Service, the School of Engineering and Building Sciences, the School of Science, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law and the Rogers School of Management at Ted College. Many of these colleges are further organized into smaller departments and schools. The university also provides continuing education services through the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.

The institution was established in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology, named after Egerton Ryerson. In 1964, the institution was reorganized in accordance with provincial legislation and changed its name to Ryerson Institute of Technology. In 1971, it became a degree-granting institution under this name, and effectively functioned as a de facto undergraduate university for the next 22 years. In 1993, the provincial legislation was reorganized and renamed Ryerson Institute of Technology, allowing graduate study. In 2002, a few years after the establishment of the university’s graduate school, the university adopted its current name, Ryerson University.

The university is a co-educational institution, with approximately 44,400 undergraduates and 2,950 postgraduates enrolled here in the 2019-20 academic year. Many people graduated from the institution, and as of 2017, Ryerson has nearly 170,000 alumni. The university’s physical education department runs several varsity teams representing the Ryerson Rams and participates in the University of Ontario Track and Field Conference at U Sports.
