The University of Dortmund (German: Universität Dortmund) was established in 1968 at a time when the coal and steel industries in the Ruhr region were in decline. Its establishment is seen as an economic change (Strukturwandel) from heavy industry to technology. The main research areas of the university are natural sciences, engineering, pedagogy/teacher training, special education and journalism. The University of Dortmund was originally designed as a technical university, but in 1980 it merged with the neighboring university Pädagogische Hochschule Ruhr to focus on the humanities.
In 2006, the University of Dortmund hosted the 11th International Robot Football Federation (FIRA) Robot World Cup. The university’s robotic soccer team Dortmund Robotics became the deputy world champion at the 2002 Robot World Cup and finished third in 2003. On November 1, 2007, the University of Dortmund was renamed the University of Dortmund.
The university and the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen are part of the "Ruhr University Alliance" cooperation project.
On April 4, 2019, Ursula Gather, the president of the Dortmund University of Technology, cancelled the German Language and Literature and Anglo-American Studies Institute.
